Another House Republican Backs Potential Ouster of Speaker Johnson as Tensions Rise Over Foreign Aid

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) declared on Friday his intention to co-sponsor Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) motion to remove Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) from his position, making him the third House Republican to support his removal.

Gosar, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, expressed his endorsement for the dismissal of Johnson shortly after the House, with assistance from Democrats, passed a foreign aid package that excluded border security elements.

Gosar mentioned the absence in his statement supporting the removal effort.

“I have added my name in support of the motion to vacate the Speaker. Our border cannot be an afterthought. We need a Speaker who puts America first rather than bending to the reckless demands of the warmongers, neocons and the military industrial complex making billions from a costly and endless war half a world away.” Gosar stated.

Gosar is the third Republican to support Johnson’s removal, following Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) who endorsed Greene’s resolution earlier this week.

The level of threat to Johnson’s employment remains uncertain. Last month, Greene presented her removal resolution, but she has not taken any action to bring it to a vote or specified the conditions under which she would do so.

Although Greene strongly criticized Johnson’s attitude to the Ukraine issue, she did not explicitly state that she would bring her resolution to the floor.

Conservatives have consistently expressed disapproval of Johnson’s leadership of the House since he assumed the role of Speaker in October, following the departure of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

The GOP critics have alleged that he is excessively inclined to negotiate agreements with President Biden and the Democrats on significant legislation, including as funding the federal government and extending Washington’s surveillance powers. Johnson successfully guided these two matters through the lower chamber in recent weeks.
