Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., wasted no time sending a message to President Trump and his allies after Democrats won control of Congress Tuesday night.
“LAWYER UP,” Garcia posted on X.
Garcia is currently the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He is expected to become its chairman when the new Congress convenes in January. He would succeed Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., who led the committee’s investigation into then-President Joe Biden’s family business dealings.
The committee has sweeping investigative powers, including the authority to call witnesses, demand government records and issue subpoenas. Democrats will take over House committees in January, ending two years of Republican control of congressional investigations.
The two-word post signals a wave of investigations into the Trump administration. Committee Democrats released an official statement from Garcia as incoming chairman, and it consisted of the same two words. A committee press release said Garcia plans to go after what Democrats call the “Trump Crime Family.” It also listed corporate corruption, abuses at the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and an alleged cover-up of the Epstein files.
In an interview with Punchbowl News on Election Day, Garcia laid out an aggressive agenda.
“We’re not starting from scratch here,” he said. He explained that much of the committee’s work is already public and more has been quietly underway for months.
Garcia said the committee would look into the president’s crypto ventures, Donald Trump Jr., and how Trump family members, including son-in-law Jared Kushner, are sitting on boards and getting contracts. He also promised quick action on what he described as pay-to-play allegations involving former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski.
On Epstein, Garcia said lawmakers would move straight into public hearings focused on survivors. The investigation into the late convicted sex offender has bipartisan support and is expected to continue. Democrats have said they want to question more administration officials about what they knew.
Garcia also warned that anyone who has been “in bed with the Trumps” would have no choice but to answer the committee’s questions.
Democrats on the panel have already probed officials accused of profiting from their government roles. They recently demanded information from former U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle over reports she sought money from a Trump ally to pay off credit card debt before her confirmation hearing.
Republicans are already pushing back. Conservative commentators called Garcia’s warning a revenge plot. They argued Democrats have been compiling target lists for years and are eager to impeach Trump officials.
Garcia rose quickly through Democratic ranks after arriving in Congress and won a seat on the Oversight panel during his first term. He became the committee’s top Democrat in 2025. At the time, Rep. Jamie Raskin said Garcia would use the role as a bully pulpit against Republican messaging.
The investigations are expected to begin once Democrats formally take control of the House in January.
