House Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly recently voiced his disappointment with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s conduct during a meeting with President Trump, urging him to “come to his senses” and repair the U.S.-Ukraine relationship.
In a televised interview, Johnson criticized Zelensky for interrupting and berating Trump rather than expressing gratitude for the substantial support the United States has extended to Ukraine.
Johnson emphasized that the U.S. does not perceive Russia as the favorable party in the ongoing conflict, countering claims that Republicans align with Putin as absurd.
I’ve never seen anything like President Zelensky’s behavior there. He berated and interrupted his host instead of expressing gratitude for the extraordinary help that the U.S. has provided his country, and effectively helped him stay alive and stay in power.” Johnson said.
“So the way that that went down was very disappointing. I hope and pray, frankly, that President Zelensky will come to his senses, come back to President Trump, express gratitude as he should, you know, apologize for his behavior there, and accept this mineral rights deal. Because that is the best way for us to get to a point of peace over there in that region. And it’s in the interest of both countries.” he added.
He reiterated that American aid to Ukraine was aimed at positioning the country for peace talks and helping it maintain its sovereignty in the face of Russian aggression.
Highlighting the crucial role of Trump in facilitating dialogue, Johnson asserted that the former president is uniquely capable of bringing both Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table.
He expressed frustration that Zelensky’s actions jeopardized a potential agreement that could have advanced peace in the region.
Moreover, Johnson encouraged Zelensky to acknowledge the assistance provided by the U.S. and to accept a proposed deal regarding mineral rights, which he believes would be mutually beneficial.
He articulated a strong desire for Ukraine to recognize the importance of gratitude and cooperation in working toward a resolution of the conflict, emphasizing that such an approach aligns with both American interests and those of its European allies.
Overall, Johnson’s remarks reflect a call for a more collaborative effort between Ukraine and the U.S. to achieve stability and peace in the region.
