The security cabinet of Israel has now reportedly voted to confirm a cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip, which would release Israeli hostages, concluding two days of discussions that highlighted the arrangement’s precariousness.
The endorsement of the multi-phase agreement occurred shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had alleged that Hamas violated aspects of a pact initially declared on Wednesday, stated that negotiators had achieved a consensus.
The entire cabinet assembled later on Friday to deliberate and cast their votes on the matter.
Netanyahu’s staff informed the relatives of captives that arrangements were being made for the potential implementation of the deal as early as Sunday.
President-elect Donald Trump, who had advocated vigorously for a resolution prior to his inauguration on Monday, intervened once more as negotiators deliberated the final details.
One day prior, President Biden and the Prime Minister of Qatar declared that both Israel and Hamas had agreed to the truce, a culmination of a year of meticulous negotiation.
The Palestinian militant organization Hamas announced it had secured an agreement with Israel, while Israeli President Isaac Herzog endorsed the accord and encouraged the Israeli government to ratify it.
However, as celebrations unfolded throughout the Gaza Strip and officials swapped accolades, Netanyahu introduced ambiguity by alleging that Hamas had reneged on aspects of the accord during negotiations in Qatar, resulting in what his office termed “a last-minute crisis.”
Hamas officials stated on Thursday that the organization continues to uphold the agreement.
According to Arab mediators, the negotiators labored late into the night on Thursday to address the final difficulties.
Ultimately, no significant alterations were made in the initial phase of the agreement, they stated, permitting it to advance as previously arranged a day prior.
However, the possibility of a cease-fire has not resulted in a cessation of hostilities.
According to Palestinian authorities and inhabitants of the enclave, Israel conducted further airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday and Thursday morning.
Israeli strikes reportedly resulted in the deaths of 81 individuals in the past 24 hours.
Numerous casualties remained trapped beneath the wreckage and on the roadways inaccessible to rescue and recovery personnel, according to Palestinian authorities.
