CNN’s Laura Coates Presses Jasmine Crockett Over Refusal to Campaign With James Talarico

CNN anchor Laura Coates pressed Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, over her decision not to campaign with Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico after he defeated her in the party’s March primary.

Crockett has faced criticism for declining to campaign alongside Talarico as he runs against Republican Ken Paxton in the general election.
During Thursday’s edition of “Laura Coates Live,” Crockett emphasized the importance of strong voter turnout and warned Democrats against placing too much confidence in polling.

She pointed to Michigan, where polling suggested Abdul El-Sayed would win his race by a much larger margin than he ultimately did.

Coates noted that Crockett, much like President Donald Trump, has the kind of political profile capable of energizing supporters and bringing voters to the polls. The CNN host then asked whether Crockett would campaign with Talarico if his campaign needed that “magnetism.”

“I will be campaigning down ballot,” Crockett replied. “I think that what matters most—”

Coates quickly interrupted and asked, “Why the distinction?”

Crockett cited previous unsuccessful statewide campaigns by Texas Democrats, including Beto O’Rourke. She argued that voters in the state should have more than a single high-profile race motivating them to participate in the election.

“I understand, but is it an either-or?” Coates asked. “Either you excite the down ballot or you—?”

Crockett responded that she believed it was an either-or situation, explaining that Texas is a “big state” and that her time and attention would be directed toward candidates running in other races.

She added that she was “really invested in a number of candidates that I didn’t get to do anything for because I was running my own Senate race.”

Crockett congratulated Talarico following his primary victory and stressed that Democrats must remain united if they hope to defeat Paxton in the general election.

However, the Texas Democrat has expressed limited confidence in Talarico’s campaign since losing the primary.

Crockett has repeatedly attempted to tamp down enthusiasm surrounding his candidacy and has dismissed favorable polling showing strength for Talarico in the Senate race.

Her comments Thursday did not indicate that she planned to join Talarico on the campaign trail. Instead, Crockett maintained that her efforts would focus on helping down-ballot candidates across Texas.

Coates continued questioning whether Crockett truly needed to choose between supporting Talarico and campaigning for other Democratic candidates, but Crockett stood by her distinction.

The tense exchange highlighted lingering questions surrounding Crockett’s support for the Democrat who defeated her, even as she publicly calls for party unity against Paxton.

For Crockett, the priority is building excitement across multiple Texas races. For critics, her refusal to campaign with Talarico continues to raise doubts about how fully she has embraced his general-election bid.
