Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott reportedly signed a bill outlawing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices and programs at higher education institutions into law on Wednesday.
State-funded colleges are no longer permitted to host events that favor one racial, ethnic, or gender group over another under SB 17 and must shut down their DEI offices.
“With this bold, forward-thinking legislation to eliminate DEI programs, Texas is leading the nation, and ensuring our campuses return to focusing on the strength of diversity and promoting a merit-based approach where individuals are judged on their qualifications, skills, and contributions. What sets SB 17 apart from other proposals is that the legislation delivers strong enforcement with mandates to return Texas colleges and universities to their core mission– educate and innovate.” State Sen. Brandon Creighton, a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement.
Prior to Abbott’s signing the bill into law on Wednesday, the state Senate and House both passed it in May.
Additionally, the legislation forbids obligatory DEI staff training and bars higher education institutions from taking into account diversity declarations from job candidates.
According to the news release, Abbott also ratified SB 18, which prohibits institutions from granting any workers tenure.
At the University of California, Berkeley, a DEI rubric was developed to take into account how job candidates have advanced diversity and equality efforts.
Higher education institutions all around the country use diversity statements to evaluate student and staff applications.

American hero Gov. Abbott is correct. Equal protections are ALREADY in place. The queers just want more than everyone else.
Discrimination Equity Exclusion are the three words that better describe what is being done.
Could not agree more! And they are destroying America, as our Founders envisioned her! A century so, and a bit more, Theodore Roosevelt made a declaration regarding immigrants ( he was referring to those entering legally, of course, as the others are just criminal invaders), which should still stand today. People who come here to become Americans, who adapt to our culture, laws, and language, should be treated as fellow Americans, equal n all ways to every other American. Agreed, so they should! They make very good citizens! Those who do not, however, should be firmly “invited” to leave our shores promptly! That would include those who use visas to get in, then overstay unlawfully. We owe such persons nothing, certainly not asylum or any other protection.
I’m all for people coming here to share the dream, to help us build, grow, and become better, more in line with our Founders’ vision, but far too many come to just take, and do other harm to our nation and citizens. They lie to get in or just break in, like the criminals they are. They congregate in our states’ capitols and chant threats to our citizens brazenly; the fill out jails and prisons for crimes, other than the unlawful entry, against our citizens; they consume services, and take jobs, meant for our citizens, who are left without; and they scream about “their rights”, as if they are owed such rights in OUR homes! The worst of it is our gov’t has been encouraging, even facilitating, this invasion for over 60 yrs! Yes, Trump tried to slow it down, but the Congress and Judiciary opposed him every step of the way, so his small dent made little overall difference, in the long run.
