Gun rights organizations are reportedly lobbying House Republican leadership to schedule a vote to stop the new Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regulation that would outlaw pistol braces as of June 1.
This puts Democrats who represent pro-gun states in a difficult position.
President Biden described the device as especially dangerous after it was used in many horrific killings.
According to the ATF, there are at least three million weapons with stabilizing braces in use in the country.
The Congressional Research Service has estimated the number of stabilizing braces in use now to be between 10 million and 40 million.
Possession of a regularly used, unlicensed plastic stabilizing brace made for use with handguns would be a crime under the new regulation. In 2012, pistol braces were created to let injured soldiers shoot on their own.
The new law mandates that pistol braces be registered with the ATF, destroyed, or removed from firearms by gun owners.
A fine will be charged to anyone who don’t follow the rule before May 31.
According to the ATF, anyone who decide to retain their handgun with a stabilizing brace unregistered risk up to 10 years in jail, $10,000 in penalties, or both.
