Asserting that pro-lifers believe the six-week abortion restriction is “too harsh,” former president Donald Trump reportedly blasted Florida’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis on Monday.
DeSantis signed the Heartbeat Protection Act on April 13, making abortion illegal in Florida after six weeks with a few exceptions. DeSantis is anticipated to declare his campaign for the 2024 presidential race in the following weeks.
In a Monday interview, Trump said that he wasn’t convinced DeSantis understood the abortion debate and that many pro-lifers thought the bill was “too harsh.”
“He has to do what he has to do. If you look at what DeSantis did, a lot of people don’t even know if he knew what he was doing. But he signed six weeks, and many people within the pro-life movement feel that that was too harsh.” Trump said.
Trump opted not to elaborate on whether he would approve a six-week ban.
Recently, pro-life organizations harshly attacked Trump for declaring that he would not sign a nationwide abortion ban if one were presented to him, calling the presidential candidate’s response “unacceptable.”
When he asserted that Republicans’ poor performance in the 2022 midterm elections was a result of their stance on abortion, the former president also drew criticism.
