President Joseph Biden has reportedly committed to sign legislation prohibiting the city of Washington, D.C. from changing its criminal and voting rules.
The city council of Washington, D.C., passed a measure to revise the city’s criminal code, as well as another permitting non-citizens to vote in local elections.
But, the House of Representatives passed two resolutions that prevent the legislation from becoming law, and the Senate is set to vote on them as soon as next week. Biden stated on Thursday that if the legislation are passed, he will sign them.
Biden allegedly informed Senate Democrats at a closed-door meeting Thursday that he would not veto the bills, which are expected to pass with bipartisan backing. After the discussion, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) confirmed the decision to reporters.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on the proposals as soon as next week. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Bob Casey (D-PA) have already voiced support for the legislation.
The House of Representatives approved a resolution on February 9 to prevent D.C. legislation enabling non-citizens to vote in municipal elections from becoming law.
Republicans were joined by 42 Democrats, and the vote was 260-162. Another resolution prohibiting the city from changing its criminal code was approved 250-173, with 31 Democrats voting in favor.
The criminal code revisions were vetoed by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, but the D.C. Council decided to override the veto.
According to NBC Washington, Bowser then offered specific changes to the amended rule, such as reinstating maximum punishments for gun offences and carjackings and postponing implementation until 2027.
The Home Rule Act of 1973 allows Congress to overturn legislation enacted by the D.C. city council before it becomes law.
