President Donald Trump has reportedly terminated Carla Hayden, the head Librarian of Congress, just days after a conservative watchdog group criticized her for promoting uber liberal policies.
Hayden, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2016, received an email on Thursday informing her of her immediate dismissal.
The American Accountability Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on government oversight, had recently called for Hayden’s removal, particularly highlighting her opposition to restricting minors’ access to sexually-themed books.
In the email from Deputy Director of Presidential Personnel Trent Morse, Hayden was thanked for her service but advised that her position was no longer tenable.
The American Accountability Foundation celebrated the firing, expressing gratitude to Trump for removing what they termed a “woke” official.
They had previously urged the president to also dismiss Shira Perlmutter, the Director of the U.S. Copyright Office, as part of a broader effort to eliminate liberal influences from the federal government.
Hayden’s tenure was marked by controversy, including her history of donating to Democratic candidates and the backlash she faced in 2022 when the Library of Congress lent a historic crystal flute, once owned by President James Madison, to rapper Lizzo for a performance.
Democrats reacted strongly to her dismissal, framing it as part of Trump’s “assault on America’s libraries.”
New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich criticized the move, arguing that while Trump seeks to limit access to books, Hayden has dedicated her career to promoting reading and knowledge for all.
Hayden’s firing coincided with the dismissal of acting FEMA Director Cameron Hamilton, who opposed Trump’s proposals to dismantle the agency, underscoring the administration’s ongoing reshaping of federal leadership.
