Former Congressman George Santos has now reportedly been sentenced to 87 months in prison after being convicted of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Santos, who represented New York, gained notoriety during his brief tenure for his numerous fabrications and unwavering support for Donald Trump.
His political career unraveled after facing 13 federal charges, leading to his expulsion from Congress in December 2023.
Santos’s troubles began when a House Ethics Committee report detailed his unethical behavior, which included allegations of defrauding colleagues and even his own mother.
In March 2024, shortly after his expulsion, he announced plans to run for a different Congressional seat but later pleaded guilty to two counts in August 2024.

In his plea agreement, Santos admitted to misusing campaign funds for personal expenses, submitting false reports to the Federal Election Commission, and stealing the financial information of vulnerable donors.
At his sentencing hearing in Central Islip, New York, Santos reportedly broke down in tears, acknowledging his betrayal of public trust.
He stated, “I cannot rewrite the past, but I can control the road ahead.” However, U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert dismissed his pleas, labeling him “an arrogant fraudster” who engaged in “flagrant thievery.”
In addition to his prison term, Santos must pay over $373,000 in restitution and will face two years of supervised release after serving his sentence.
The sentence imposed aligns with the recommendation sought by the Department of Justice, which Santos had hoped to reduce to two years.
Santos is scheduled to report to prison on July 25, marking a significant fall from grace for a politician whose tenure was marred by deceitful practices.
