The presiding judge in the hush money lawsuit involving former President Trump in New York has now stated that Trump is not permitted to be present at the upcoming Supreme Court hearings on presidential immunity.
Subsequently, the judge postponed a ruling regarding Trump’s permission to attend his son Barron’s high school graduation in May.
Trump’s efforts to request specific days off during his hush money trial, which is anticipated to span several weeks or even months, coincided with the commencement of the trial’s opening day in Manhattan.
“Arguing before the Supreme Court is a big deal, and I can certainly appreciate why your client would want to be there, but a trial in New York Supreme Court … is also a big deal.” the judge stated.
Prior to the adjournment of the New York trial on Monday, a decision was made to prohibit Trump from being present in Washington, D.C. on April 25, the day when the Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments over Trump’s claim of presidential immunity in his federal criminal case.
According to the laws of New York state, Trump must be present for the whole duration of his trial unless he obtains specific authorization from the judge to be absent.
Following the conclusion of the court session, Trump insinuated that Merchan perceives himself as “superior” to the Supreme Court for obstructing his presence at the oral arguments of the top court.
In addition, the ex-president alleged that Merchan obstructed his ability to attend his son Barron’s high school commencement ceremony in May. The judge refrained from making a definitive decision on the topic earlier on Monday, but did not explicitly refuse to grant the former president permission to attend the ceremony.
