Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) announced late on Thursday that he will not seek reelection in the Democratic primary.
This decision was made in light of the fact that Menendez is being investigated for corruption involving foreign countries and is currently facing numerous felonies.
In September, Menendez and his spouse faced criminal accusations after it was said that they collected bribes from three businesses in exchange for his acts as the head of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The DOJ claims that Egypt benefited from the bribes and that the businesses were protected.
Menendez faced charges of conspiring to conduct bribery, honest services fraud, extortion under false pretenses, and conspiring to use a public official’s position as a foreign agent.
In a later amended indictment, the prosecution said that he also allegedly used his influence to assist a friend in getting a multimillion dollar investment contract from the Qatari government, in part by doing things that were advantageous to Qatar.
Menendez was charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, operating as a foreign agent as a public official, bribery, extortion, and honest services wire fraud in a superseding indictment that followed.
Menendez has refuted any misconduct and characterized the probe as an additional effort by federal law enforcement to remove him following his conviction for corruption.
