Biden Moves to Cancel More Student Debt In Spite of Supreme Court Ruling

The Biden administration announced on Friday that it would terminate the loans of an additional 74,000 student loan borrowers, bringing the total number of Americans whose debt has been canceled to over 3.7 million.

The Biden administration has been disregarding the ruling of the Supreme Court, which invalidated Biden’s student loan relief plan in June of last year on the grounds that it lacked congressional approval.

“My Administration is able to deliver relief to these borrowers – and millions more – because of fixes we made to broken student loan programs that were preventing borrowers from getting relief they were entitled to under the law. Today’s announcement comes on top of all we’ve been able to achieve for students and student loan borrowers in the past few years.” Biden announced.

“And, in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision on our student debt relief plan, we are continuing to pursue an alternative path to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible as quickly as possible,” he continued.

The 6-3 ruling of the Supreme Court was the result of six conservative justices voting to invalidate the plan, while three liberal justices opposed it.

The Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act (HEROES Act) of 2003 was referenced by the Biden administration to support its case for the student loan debt relief.
