Democrat Maryland Senator Ben Cardin Will Reportedly Not Run for Re-Election

Ben Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland, reportedly informed The Baltimore Sun on Monday that he will not run for re-election to his post in the U.S. Senate.

After raising less than $15,000 in the first quarter of 2023, more than $300,000 less than his total at the same period in the 2018 election cycle, the 79-year-old’s retirement rumors started to heat up.

Cardin has been a senator since 2007 and a member of congress since 1987.

Cardin joins Debbie Stabenow of Michigan and Dianne Feinstein of California as the third Democratic senators to retire or resign before of the 2024 election cycle. Cardin is the fifth senator overall to make such an announcement.

While Republican Ben Sasse of Nebraska resigned in January to become the president of the University of Florida, Republican Mike Braun of Indiana is leaving the Senate to run for governor.

Since 2007, Maryland has been represented in the US Senate by Senator Ben Cardin, a well-known Democrat.

Cardin, who was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 5, 1943, is a University of Pittsburgh and University of Maryland Law School alum.

Cardin entered politics in 1967 after winning a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates.

Before being chosen to the United States House of Representatives in 1987, he served there for 20 years.

He gained a reputation for his activism on a number of topics while serving in the House, including civil rights, healthcare, and the environment.

Cardin declared his campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2006, and the following year he was elected.

Since then, he has participated in a number of significant committees, including the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee, and the Foreign Relations Committee.
