Former Congressman Jeff Fortenberry of Nebraska has avoided prison time after being convicted of lying to the FBI, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Instead, Fortenberry was sentenced to probation for two years, 360 hours of community service, and a $25,000 fine.
Fortenberry resigned from congress after a jury found him guilty of two counts of making false statements and one count of falsifying and concealing material facts, in March.
Fortenberry has stated that he will appeal the ruling.
“We always felt like it was going to be hard to have a fair process here, Fortenberry said about the trial being held in California.
The trial was held there because the violation occurred during a fundraising event there in 2016.
