Trump Announces Temporary Beef Tariff Relief in Push to Lower Grocery Prices

President Donald Trump announced a new deal Friday temporarily lifting certain tariffs on ground beef imports as his administration seeks to bring down grocery prices ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Under the plan, the United States will permit up to 300,000 metric tons of beef intended for ground beef production to enter the country without an out-of-quota tariff during the next 90 days.

Trump announced the move on Truth Social, blaming elevated beef prices on former President Joe Biden while arguing that the temporary tariff relief will provide American producers with time to rebuild domestic supplies.

“As everyone knows, under President Joe Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history,” Trump wrote.

The president said the administration is working to rebuild the nation’s cattle herd while simultaneously attempting to provide consumers with relief from high prices at the grocery store.

“As we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers, for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff,” Trump said.

The president also said the administration received a commitment that the imported beef covered by the agreement would be sold below current market prices.
“We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices,” Trump wrote.

“This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again,” he added.
The announcement comes as Republicans face increasing political pressure over cost-of-living concerns ahead of the November elections that will determine which party controls Congress.

The costs of groceries, housing, healthcare and utilities remain major concerns for voters. Prices for highly visible grocery staples such as beef can also influence how Americans view the broader economy.

Ground beef prices remained near record levels in July, according to Bloomberg. New Bureau of Labor Statistics data cited in the report found the average price of a pound of beef was $7.116, representing a 9.4% increase compared with the previous year.

Trump has previously pursued other ways to increase the nation’s beef supply as prices have climbed.

Those efforts have included boosting beef imports from Argentina as well as attempting to resume shipments of live cattle from Mexico.

The new tariff arrangement represents the administration’s latest attempt to increase the amount of beef available to American consumers while domestic producers rebuild their herds.

The temporary policy will remain in effect for 90 days and applies to as much as 300,000 metric tons of imported product designated for ground beef production.

Trump argued the approach could accomplish both goals at once — providing Americans with lower beef prices in the near term while giving U.S. ranchers additional time to increase domestic supplies.
