A targeted shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas on Wednesday reportedly left three people injured, including detainees, and prompted an ongoing federal investigation into an apparent anti-ICE attack.
FBI Director Kash Patel revealed that an unspent casing recovered at the scene bore the message “ANTI-ICE,” suggesting a politically motivated motive.
Sharing a photo of the bullets on X, Patel said, “While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical [sic] motive behind this attack.”
Dallas police spokesperson Officer Jonathen E. Maner told the Associated Press that one person died at the scene, while two others were hospitalized, though their conditions were not immediately known. Patel clarified that none of the injured were law enforcement personnel.
The shooting occurred around 6:40 a.m., when officers responded to a call to assist an officer on North Stemmons Freeway. Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect opened fire on the ICE facility from a nearby building.
Joe Rothrock, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Dallas field office, noted at a press conference that the rounds with the anti-ICE message were found near the suspected shooter.
Officials have not released the identities of those harmed, only confirming that detainees were among the victims. The incident is now part of a broader concern over targeted attacks against government officials and federal agencies.
The Dallas shooting comes just two weeks after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated by a rifle-wielding shooter on a roof. Both incidents underscore what authorities are calling a worrying trend of politically motivated attacks aimed at public figures and law enforcement institutions.
Patel’s comments pointed to the ideological nature of the attack, highlighting the risk posed to federal employees and detainees alike. “While the investigation is ongoing,” he said, “an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical motive behind this attack.” The message on the bullet casing appeared to confirm suspicions that the assailant acted against ICE in a deliberate act of hostility.
The incident in Dallas also raises questions about the targeting of federal personnel and facilities, particularly those engaged in enforcement of U.S. immigration law. ICE agents, often at the front lines of policy enforcement, have increasingly been depicted as focal points for ideological attacks in recent years.
Authorities are continuing to search for any additional suspects and are reviewing security measures at federal facilities nationwide.
The Dallas shooting adds urgency to federal efforts to prevent ideologically motivated violence and to safeguard personnel working in high-risk operational environments.
As investigations continue, law enforcement officials are calling on the public to come forward with information about the incident.
The attack serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by federal employees carrying out their duties and the importance of ensuring that ideological extremism does not escalate into lethal violence.
