DOJ Employee Fired, Charged After Alleged Sandwich Assault on Federal Officer

Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday reportedly announced the firing and felony charge of a Washington, D.C., man accused of assaulting a federal law enforcement officer with a sandwich — a case she described as emblematic of entrenched hostility toward the current administration’s law-and-order agenda.

“I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice — NO LONGER,” Ms. Bondi wrote in a statement posted to the social platform X. “Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony. This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ.”

The accused, 37-year-old Sean Charles Dunn, was charged with felony assault after allegedly throwing a Subway sandwich at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent on Sunday. The encounter, captured on video by onlookers, quickly spread across social media.

In the footage, Mr. Dunn can be heard shouting at a group of agents: “Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!” The incident, taking place against a backdrop of heightened tensions over federal immigration enforcement, drew swift condemnation from senior officials.

“He thought it was funny,” said U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro in a video statement responding to the episode. “Well, he doesn’t think it’s funny today because we charged him with a felony, assault on a police officer, and we’re going to back the police to the hilt. So there, stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else.”

For Ms. Bondi, who has made reorganizing the Justice Department a central priority since taking office, the case served as a pointed reminder of what she characterizes as lingering elements within the agency resistant to the administration’s objectives.

“You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement,” she declared in her Thursday post.

The firing underscores her pledge to enforce professional standards and restore public trust in the department, particularly in matters involving federal officers.

By linking the episode to what she labeled “the Deep State,” Ms. Bondi signaled her determination to root out personnel she believes undermine the mission of supporting law enforcement at every level.

The swift disciplinary action — termination from DOJ employment and the filing of felony charges — is being framed by senior officials as evidence of a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct, especially when directed at agents carrying out their duties.

While liberal critics have often downplayed confrontations with law enforcement as minor acts of protest, Ms. Bondi and Ms. Pirro made clear they view such incidents as serious assaults requiring strong legal consequences.

The case now moves forward in the federal court system, where prosecutors will seek to prove that the alleged sandwich-throwing constituted an assault on a police officer under the law.

In the meantime, the administration is positioning the matter as both a cautionary tale and a reaffirmation of its commitment to defend the men and women in uniform.

By acting decisively, Ms. Bondi signaled that the Justice Department, under her leadership, intends to take both discipline and prosecution seriously — even when the weapon in question is as seemingly trivial as a sandwich.
