A significant breakthrough has now reportedly emerged in the ongoing tariff standoff between the United States and China, as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are scheduled to meet with Chinese officials in Switzerland this weekend.
The talks were confirmed by both the U.S. and Chinese agencies, marking a proactive step toward addressing trade and economic issues.
During a new interview on Fox News’s “The Ingraham Angle,” Bessent explained that he was initially in Switzerland to negotiate with Swiss officials when he learned that the Chinese delegation would also be in the country.
He emphasized the need for collaboration, stating, “The world has been coming to the U.S., and China has been the missing piece.”
He expressed concerns about the current trade situation, which he described as unsustainable, particularly for China.
The backdrop to these discussions includes a recent escalation in tariffs, with the U.S. imposing a 145% penalty on Chinese goods, while China retaliated with tariffs of 125% on U.S. products.
Protests in China have erupted over factory closures linked to these tariffs, highlighting the economic strain on both sides.
Bessent reiterated the administration’s desire for fair trade rather than complete decoupling from China. He noted, “We don’t want to decouple; what we want is fair trade.”
Alongside the meetings with Chinese officials, Bessent and Greer are also expected to meet with Switzerland’s President, Karin Keller-Sutter, to further discuss trade relations.
These talks follow recent negotiations with other nations, including India, South Korea, and Japan, indicating a broader effort by the Trump administration to rebalance trade relations and enhance economic security.
