President Donald Trump reportedly revealed that he spoke with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos after a report suggested the e-commerce giant planned to display tariff costs alongside product prices on its website.
Trump described Bezos as “very nice” and commended him for quickly resolving the issue, stating that he “did the right thing.”
The conversation followed a report by Punchbowl News, which prompted White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to criticize Amazon’s alleged move as “hostile and political.”
Leavitt’s comments highlighted concerns about Amazon’s past partnerships, referencing a 2021 Reuters article about the company collaborating with a Chinese propaganda entity.
Following the backlash, Amazon denied any plans to show tariff costs on its main site, clarifying that the discussion was limited to the “ultra low cost Amazon Haul store.”
A spokesperson emphasized that the idea was never considered for the main platform and that no changes had been implemented.
Trump reportedly expressed anger upon learning about Amazon’s intentions. His administration has previously imposed significant tariffs on Chinese imports, which heavily impact Amazon, as over 70% of its products are sourced from China.
Competing companies like Temu and Shein have already begun adding tariff surcharges to their products, displaying an additional 145% import charge.
The interaction between Trump and Bezos marks a notable shift in their relationship, especially following Bezos’s attendance at Trump’s inauguration and more recent meetings at Mar-a-Lago.
This incident reflects ongoing tensions related to trade policies and corporate practices in the current political landscape, with both Trump and his administration closely monitoring Amazon’s actions amid the tariff environment.
