California Governor Gavin Newsom has now reportedly launched a new tourism campaign aimed at attracting Canadian visitors, positioning the state as a welcoming alternative to the policies of the Trump administration.
In a video message released on Monday, Newsom emphasized the strong ties between California and Canada, stating, “We have always shared so much in common.”
Acknowledging tensions between the two countries, particularly due to Trump’s imposition of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, Newsom urged Canadians not to let political disputes affect their travel plans.
“California is the ultimate playground — over 2,000 miles from Washington and a world away in mindset,” he said, highlighting the state’s diverse attractions, from its beautiful beaches and national parks to its renowned food and wine scene.
Last year, nearly two million Canadians visited California, contributing approximately $3.7 billion to the state’s economy.
However, rising tensions and tariffs have led some Canadians to reconsider their travel intentions.
In response, Canada has initiated its own billboard campaign in the U.S. to educate Americans about the impact of these tariffs.
Despite the ongoing trade war, Newsom is focusing on strengthening economic and political relationships with Canada.
He recently met with British Columbia Premier David Eby to discuss expanding partnerships in climate and trade. “As tariffs threaten jobs & businesses on both sides of the border, California remains a steady, reliable partner open for business,” Newsom asserted.
With an eye toward a potential presidential run in 2028, Newsom’s campaign not only seeks to boost tourism but also aims to foster greater cooperation with Canada amid challenging diplomatic relations.
