President Donald Trump has now reportedly announced a pause on the implementation of tariffs on Mexico after a conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
This decision comes in the wake of Trump’s earlier announcement regarding a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% tariff on goods from China, which went into effect just days prior.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Mexico would not have to pay tariffs on products covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) until April 2.
“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement. This Agreement is until April 2nd.” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl.” he added.
He emphasized that this move was made to accommodate and show respect for President Sheinbaum, highlighting the positive relationship between the two nations.
Trump noted ongoing collaboration to address issues such as illegal immigration and the trafficking of fentanyl across the border.
President Sheinbaum responded positively to Trump’s announcement, expressing gratitude for the cooperative dialogue between their administrations.
She emphasized the importance of their collaboration in achieving significant results while respecting each country’s sovereignty.
Sheinbaum reiterated the commitment to work together on mutual concerns, particularly focusing on migration and security issues, including the reduction of illegal fentanyl crossings into the U.S. and arms smuggling into Mexico.
She also confirmed that the pause on tariffs would end on April 2, when the U.S. plans to announce reciprocal tariffs for all countries.
This development reflects a strategic diplomatic effort between the U.S. and Mexico, aiming to strengthen ties while addressing critical border and security challenges.
