In a statement released on Wednesday, Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, criticized President Trump’s proposal to grab control of Gaza, send in U.S. troops if they are required, and transform Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
“The pursuit for peace should be that of the Israelis and the Palestinians. I thought we voted for America First. We have no business contemplating yet another occupation to doom our treasure and spill our soldiers blood,”

Paul appended his comment to a repost of a tweet by Secretary of State Marco Rubio that praised President Trump’s promises to make Gaza “beautiful again.”
“Gaza MUST BE FREE from Hamas. As @POTUS shared today, the United States stands ready to lead and Make Gaza Beautiful Again. Our pursuit is one of lasting peace in the region for all people,” Rubio wrote in the tweet.
It appeared as though Paul was concerned about Trump’s willingness to commit American troops to Gaza in establish a new security zone and dislodge Hamas.
“As far as Gaza is concerned, we’ll do what is necessary. If it’s necessary [to send U.S. troops to Gaza], we’ll do that. We’re going to take over that piece that we’re going to develop it,” Trump stated in a recent news conference.
However, there are other Republicans who have responded positively to Trump’s idea. One of these Republicans is Speaker Mike Johnson.
In order to exert pressure on Trump, Democrats might use the leverage they have over the United States’ sales of arms to Israel.
A one billion dollar arms sale to Israel, which would include armored bulldozers manufactured by Caterpillar and bombs weighing one thousand pounds, has already been put on hold by Democrats since Trump took office.
