During his meeting with media on the tarmac on Sunday, President Donald Trump reportedly stated that the United States will either reclaim control of the Panama Canal or something very significant is going to take place.
Following the departure of Air Force One at Joint Andrews Airbase on Sunday, President Trump reaffirmed his determination to seize control of the Panama canal.
He made this statement after claiming that China is operating the canal and using it as a weapon against the United States.
Over the course of the weekend, Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to Panama, where he conveyed to the officials of the country that they must take quick action in order to curtail China’s influence over the canal, or else they will suffer retaliation from the United States.
After then, Trump made a statement to the press insisting that “something very powerful is going to happen” in the event that the United States is not granted sovereignty over the canal.
When it comes to exerting pressure on Panama to hand over the canal, the president has not been averse to the possibility of deploying economic and military action in order to defend U.S. interests.
“Secretary of State Rubio is in Panama — Panama right now. And we’re talking about the Panama Canal. What they’ve done is terrible. They violated the agreement. They are not allowed to violate the agreement. China is running the Panama Canal. That was not given to China. That was given to Panama, foolishly. But they violated the agreement. And we’re going to take it back or something very powerful is going to happen.” Trump said.
