In an apparent effort to antagonize senators who rejected his confirmation for attorney general, former Republican congressman Matt Gaetz announced on Sunday morning that he would run for the Senate seat that Marco Rubio will shortly depart.
After a few weeks, Rubio will step down from his position in the Senate in order to take on the role of secretary of state for President-elect Donald Trump.
After it became clear that Gaetz did not have the votes necessary for confirmation, Trump withdrew his nomination for the position of head of the Justice Department. Gaetz had been previously nominated by Trump.
Gaetz frequently engaged in conflict with members of his own party and was the subject of an ethics investigation by the House of Representatives due to allegations of sexual misconduct with juveniles, among other allegations.
Gaetz addressed a throng of conservatives in Phoneix on Sunday morning at the AmFest 2024 conference hosted by Turning Point USA that he did not know what he would do thereafter when he resigned from his position in the House of Representatives.
He made it abundantly evident that he had a few ideas, but he began by attacking Republican senators who were opposed to his nomination for attorney general.
“Republican senators, we, the voters of this movement, will not accept the answer that you voted for Joe Biden’s nominees like Lloyd Austin but refuse Trump’s,” Gaetz said.
“Many have asked which perch I will be fighting from next. And some of you throughout this conference have even given me a few suggestions. My fellow Floridians have asked me to eye the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee.” he added
“Maybe special counsel to go after the insider trading for my former colleagues in Congress. It seems I may not have had enough support in the United States Senate. Maybe I’ll just run for Marco Rubio’s vacant seat in the United States Senate.” Gaetz concluded.
