In response to former President Trump’s intentions to implement substantial tariffs on imports, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declared on Tuesday that he is “not a fan of tariffs” and cautioned that they have a propensity to elevate the costs of American consumers.
Mark Cuban, a prominent industrialist, characterized Trump’s threat to impose 200-percent tariffs on John Deere tractors manufactured in Mexico as “insane.”
Afterward, the longtime Senate GOP leader decided to publicly comment on the matter.
“I’m not a fan of tariffs. They raise the prices for American consumers. I’m more of a free-trade kind of Republican that remembers how many jobs are created by the exports that we engage in. So, I’m not a tariff fan,” McConnell said.
Tractor maker John Deere was recently threatened by President Trump with substantial tariffs if it relocated its manufacturing facilities to Mexico.
Trump has also suggested imposing tariffs of 60% or higher on Chinese products and a blanket tariff of 20% on imports from other countries.
“if you don’t make your product here, you will have to pay a tariff, a very substantial tariff when you send your product into the United States,” Trump said to voters in Georgia.
“And by the way, for years they knocked the word. The word ‘tariff,’ when properly used, is a beautiful word. One of the most beautiful words I’ve ever heard. It’s music to my ears. A lot of bad people didn’t like that word but now they’re finding out I was right.” he concluded.
