Amidst mounting criticism over foreign policy and the economy, Cornel West stated in a new interview that he believes President Biden may withdraw from the 2024 campaign in the coming months.
“I’m not even sure whether I’ll be running against Biden. Biden — I think he’s going to have an LBJ moment [and] pull back.” West said in a statement to Politico.
“I’m just saying that I’m open to those possibilities, given the fluidity of the situation. He’s running out of gas.” he continued.
Amid health concerns and criticism of the Vietnam War, former President Johnson declared his withdrawal from the race for re-election on March 31, 1968, just months before the election.
West stated that Biden’s campaign has a significant possibility of falling short of the November primary.
According to West, his true opponents are Democrats Gavin Newsom (D-California) and Gretchen Whitmer (D-Michigan), who have not yet declared their candidacy for the White House.
National polls have shown little support for West’s unaffiliated independent campaign, which he has launched following unsuccessful runs for the People’s Party and Green Party.
Although this figure excludes other third-party candidates, he has garnered an average of 5 percent support in polls that include him alongside Biden and Trump.
