The White House announced on Tuesday that President Biden will veto a plan that House Republicans had proposed to help Israel, but would also decrease money for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and omit funds for other national security goals.
In a lengthy statement of administration policy, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) attacked the House GOP proposal, claiming it “inserts partisanship into support for Israel” and fails to meet the current demands by omitting aid for Ukraine and its Indo-Pacific allies as well as humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza.
The White House further claimed that by include funding cuts in an emergency national security package, the GOP proposal deviates from bipartisan history.
“Congress has consistently worked in a bipartisan manner to provide security assistance to Israel, and this bill threatens to unnecessarily undermine that longstanding approach. Bifurcating Israel security assistance from the other priorities in the national security supplemental will have global consequences.” A statement from the White House said.
The GOP plan that was announced on Monday would give Israel $14.3 billion in support as it fights Hamas, the militant organization that rules Gaza and conducted out terrorist strikes on October 7 that resulted in the deaths of about 1,400 Israelis.
One of Biden’s most notable policy achievements, the Inflation Reduction Act, was a comprehensive tax, health, and environment plan that was passed into law last year.
The proposal would reduce IRS funds included in the Act.
