In the most recent survey of West Virginia voters, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is now trailing Gov. Jim Justice (R) by a stunning 13 points.
In the 539 voters surveyed by Emerson College between October 1 and 4, Justice received 41% of the vote, while Manchin received 28%. 15% of voters said they would back a different candidate in this situation, while 16% are still uncertain.
Justice fared better than President Biden, who had a 19% job approval rating in West Virginia and a 71% disapproval rating, with a job approval rating of 40% compared to a disapproval rating of 26%.
The poll also found however that Manchin prevails over Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.), who is currently competing with Justice to be the Senate Republican nominee.
According to the poll, Manchin would defeat Mooney by a margin of 37 percent to 31 percent.
In this case, 13% of voters would back a different candidate, and 18% are still unsure.
Manchin previously implied that he believed his eventual GOP opponent would be weak.
Manchin intends to declare his intentions to run for reelection at the beginning of 2024 but has so far not officially announced his intentions regarding the upcoming 2024 contest.
