Chairman of the House Oversight Committee James Comer (R-Ky.) has now reportedly subpoenaed Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) Alejandro Mayorkas, three additional DHS personnel, and two Secret Service agents on Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into whether the Justice Department improperly informed the protective agency that Hunter Biden was being investigated for alleged tax offenses.
The six subpoenas serve two purposes; committees are interested in learning how the Secret Service and the Biden transition team were informed about intentions to interview the president’s son, and they are also claiming illegal behavior on the part of the agencies.
The subpoena also demands information about DHS’s Office of Legislative Affairs and makes allegations that DHS prevented the Secret Service from responding to an earlier request for interviews regarding allegations from IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, in addition to the information the Secret Service is seeking about its discussions with the Justice Department.
Hunter Biden’s scheduled interview attempt on Dec. 8, 2020 was thwarted after Secret Service headquarters received an incorrect tip, according to Shapley, an IRS agent who previously oversaw the inquiry into Biden’s financial problems.
Following Shapley’s testimony before Congress, Comer, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-Mo.) requested testimony from several Secret Service employees regarding Shapley’s allegations in a letter to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on June 29.
Along with Mayorkas, Comer served subpoenas on the DHS Office of Legislative Affairs Assistant Secretary Zephranie Buetow, DHS Director of Oversight K. Shiek Pal, DHS Senior Advisor to the General Counsel Stephen Jonas, Secret Service Assistant Director in the Office of Intergovernmental and Legislative Affairs Vincent Tutoni, and Acting Special Agent in Charge in the Congressional Affairs Program David McKeown.
The subpoenas ask for all emails from DHS or Secret Service employees dated December 2020 that pertain to the Biden probe as well as all emails and correspondence dated June 29 and after that relate to the committee’s inquiry into Shapley’s allegations.
