The Biden White House reportedly attacked Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Thursday, branding her the “hardcore fringe” of the Republican Party after she threatened to cause of government shutdown if Congress doesn’t vote on an impeachment investigation into President Biden.
Greene declared on Thursday that if the House did not vote to begin the impeachment investigation, she will not vote to fund the government and prevent a shutdown.
The funding for the conflict in Ukraine, what she referred to as the “weaponization” of government, and demands relating to the coronavirus were among the additional conditions she placed on her vote.
In order to fund the government past September 30th, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Biden both called for a short-term continuing resolution, or CR, on Thursday.
However, some staunch Republicans are welcoming the prospect of a shutdown and putting aside worries about the rapidly approaching deadline.
McCarthy is also making more and more indications that he wants to start an impeachment investigation when the House reconvenes in September.
Only one of the 12 regular appropriations measures has been approved by the House, and none have been approved by the Senate.
Up until the end of the fiscal year 2023, the House will be in session for just 11 more legislative days.
About $40 billion in supplementary spending, including $24 billion in military, financial, and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, has been requested by Biden from Congress.
His demands, which have grown more urgent in the aftermath of the Maui wildfires and Hurricane Idalia, include $12 billion in more funding to make sure the Federal Emergency Management Agency has adequate money to respond to natural disasters as well as to handle upcoming crises.
