Trump Official Slams CNN Report From Iran as ‘Pro-Regime Propaganda’ After Clip Sparks Online Backlash

A senior Trump administration official accused CNN of spreading what he called “pro-Iran regime propaganda” after a report filmed inside Iran went viral online and sparked a sharp backlash from conservative voices and MAGA influencers.

The controversy began after CNN senior international correspondent Frederik Pleitgen aired a report Thursday night on Anderson Cooper 360°, offering viewers a look at daily life inside Iran following recent joint U.S. and Israeli strikes ordered by President Donald Trump.

In the segment, Pleitgen described what he said were relatively calm scenes despite the recent military operation targeting Iran’s leadership and infrastructure.

While filming during a stop for coffee, Pleitgen acknowledged that there were visible signs of damage in the area, including damaged buildings, smoke, and armed checkpoints. But he said he had not observed indications that the country’s order had broken down.

“I haven’t seen any sign of order collapsing here,” Pleitgen said during the report.

The CNN correspondent also described businesses continuing to operate.

“All the shops are open and really well-stocked, even with fresh things like fruits and vegetables,” Pleitgen reported.

Standing outside a gas station, he added that fuel appeared to be readily available and that he had not seen long lines of motorists waiting to fill up their vehicles.

“There are no long lines,” he said, adding that gasoline seemed easy to obtain.

“You just don’t see any sort of degree of panic anywhere,” Pleitgen concluded.

The footage quickly began circulating across social media platforms, where it drew criticism from Trump allies and conservative commentators who questioned the way the situation inside Iran was portrayed.

Among the critics was Dylan Johnson, who was recently appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs and previously served as deputy communications director for Trump’s 2024 campaign.

Johnson posted a 30-second clip from Pleitgen’s report on the social platform X and took aim at the network’s coverage.

“CNN appears to now be doing straight up pro-Iran regime propaganda because someone gave this guy a coffee…” Johnson wrote.

Pleitgen responded directly to the criticism, pushing back on Johnson’s remark by clarifying that he had purchased the coffee himself.

“I bought” the coffee, Pleitgen replied.

The exchange quickly fueled further reactions online, with a number of MAGA-aligned influencers and conservatives joining the criticism and slamming the CNN report.

At the same time, other social media users stepped forward to defend Pleitgen and the reporting.

Amid the growing debate over the coverage, the State Department weighed in when asked about the issue. Speaking to NPR diplomatic correspondent Michele Keleman, a State Department spokesperson encouraged news outlets to rely on official information when reporting on developments involving U.S. foreign policy.

“We encourage media outlets to verify information with official U.S. government sources before publication,” the spokesperson said.

Pleitgen had crossed into Iran earlier Thursday morning, according to the report, making CNN the only U.S. television network currently reporting from inside the country following the February 28 strikes carried out by U.S. and Israeli forces.

CNN acknowledged that its reporting inside Iran is conducted under restrictions, stating that the network is able to operate in the country only with “government permission.”

The situation has added another layer of tension to the already heated debate surrounding media coverage of the conflict and how conditions inside Iran are being portrayed to American audiences.
