Trump Accuses Canada of Meddling in Supreme Court Tariff Case, Halts Trade Talks

President Donald Trump reportedly intensified his economic confrontation with Canada on Friday, accusing America’s northern neighbor of attempting to “illegally influence” the U.S. Supreme Court as it prepares to hear arguments on the legality of his tariff policies.

“CANADA CHEATED AND GOT CAUGHT!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, denouncing what he described as a deceptive effort by Canada to undermine one of his signature economic tools. He asserted that Canadian officials purchased advertisements misrepresenting former President Ronald Reagan’s views on tariff policy. According to Trump, the late president “LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY,” contrary to how he was portrayed in the alleged ad campaign.

Trump charged that Canada “is trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in the history of our Country,” pointing to longstanding trade disputes in which Canadian tariffs on U.S. agricultural products have reached as high as 400 percent. “Now they, and other countries, can’t take advantage of the U.S. any longer,” he added, thanking the Ronald Reagan Foundation “for exposing this FRAUD.”

The Supreme Court recently allotted more time for oral arguments in the upcoming case that could determine the future of Trump’s tariff authority. A first hearing is set for next month, and the president has warned that the United States could owe “trillions” should the court rule against his actions.

The president had already declared on Thursday night that he had “terminated” trade negotiations with Canada, again citing what he called a “FAKE” Reagan advertisement. “They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts,” Trump stated, asserting that tariffs are “VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A.”

The rupture comes amid new economic data showing inflation rising 3 percent in September, a slight improvement over expectations.

While critics continue to question the economic impact of Trump’s aggressive trade stance, the president maintains that tariffs and renegotiated trade agreements are crucial to restoring American manufacturing strength and protecting U.S. workers from foreign exploitation.

“MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” Trump declared in his message, signaling that his tariff strategy remains central to his economic agenda—and to his ongoing confrontation with Canada.
