In a striking reversal, comedian and political commentator Dave Smith has now reportedly publicly apologized for his support of Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential election.
In a recent interview on the YouTube program Breaking Points, Smith articulated his disillusionment with the president, specifically criticizing his handling of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
“I supported him this last year,” Smith stated, expressing regret for what he termed a “bad calculation.” He went on to declare that Trump should be impeached and removed from office, a statement that underscores the growing discontent among some of the president’s allies.
Smith, a libertarian known for his candid views, had initially backed Trump based on the promise of ending foreign wars. However, he condemned Trump’s recent actions regarding the conflict, labeling them an “absolute betrayal” of his campaign platform.
The comedian’s remarks come amid a backdrop of increasing military exchanges between Israel and Iran, following Israel’s strikes aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions—an assertion Iran vehemently denies.
During the interview, Smith noted that Trump’s stance on the conflict has alienated a segment of his coalition. “There are a lot of us that simply will not go along with this,” he warned, reflecting a sentiment echoed by other former supporters.
Notably, Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host, has also criticized Trump, suggesting that any American involvement in a war with Iran could jeopardize his presidency and the broader American political landscape.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump responded to the situation by threatening Iran with military action while simultaneously expressing hopes for a diplomatic resolution.
Smith dismissed this approach as ineffective, stating, “What an impotent leader!” He drew a parallel to historical moments of conflict, arguing that now is not the time for negotiation but rather decisive action.
Other important conservative influencers, such as Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, and Ben Shapiro have thrown their support behind the president.
As tensions escalate in the Middle East and with several of Trump’s former supporters voicing their discontent, Smith’s public apology may signal a pivotal moment within the fractured coalition that once rallied around the former president.
