In a bold military maneuver, Israel has reportedly established a secret drone base near Tehran, enabling recent airstrikes against Iranian targets.
This covert operation, detailed by security officials in reports, involved years of preparation, including the smuggling of advanced weapons systems and commandos into Iran.
The Israeli strikes aimed to neutralize surface-to-surface missile launchers and dismantle Iran’s air defense capabilities.
According to reports from the Times of Israel, Mossad commandos deployed precision missiles near anti-aircraft sites, facilitating a coordinated attack that involved over 200 Israeli Air Force jets targeting more than 100 sites across Iran.
These sites included critical nuclear enrichment facilities and locations associated with Iran’s ballistic missile program.
Among the key targets was the Natanz Nuclear Facility, one of Iran’s most significant nuclear sites, where Israeli operatives reportedly damaged the underground infrastructure of the facility’s multi-story enrichment hall.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) characterized the operation as the culmination of extensive planning and training, describing it as a mission that, just six months prior, seemed unattainable.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the operation, dubbed “Rising Lion,” emphasizing Israel’s determination to eliminate perceived threats from Iran.
“This operation will continue for as many days as it takes to remove this threat,” Netanyahu declared in a video statement, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin articulated the rationale behind the strikes, stating, “We have no choice. We are operating against an imminent and existential threat.”
The attacks have reportedly resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian military officials, including Commander of the IRGC’s Air Force Amir Ali Hajizadeh and Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Hossein Bagheri.
Most notably, Iranian media have claimed that the strikes also killed General Ismail Ghaani, the commander of the Quds Forces, who succeeded the late Qassem Soleimani.
This latest operation is part of a broader pattern of Israeli military strategy aimed at countering Iranian influence in the region.
Previous actions have included a variety of covert operations, such as the use of booby-trapped devices to target Hezbollah operatives, illustrating Israel’s commitment to preemptive strikes against perceived threats.
As tensions escalate in the Middle East, the implications of Israel’s actions could further complicate an already volatile geopolitical landscape.
The establishment of this secret base and the execution of targeted strikes represent a significant escalation in Israel’s ongoing efforts to thwart Iran’s military ambitions, raising concerns about potential retaliatory measures from Tehran and the broader ramifications for regional stability.
