Federal authorities have now reportedly indicted Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan on serious charges after she allegedly helped an undocumented immigrant evade immigration officials last month.
The federal grand jury charged Dugan with concealing a person from arrest and obstruction of proceedings.
According to the criminal complaint, Dugan confronted law enforcement officials who were waiting outside her courtroom to detain Mexican national Eduardo Flores-Ruiz.
Witnesses describe her demeanor as “visibly upset and confrontational.” Instead of allowing Flores-Ruiz to exit through the public area where officials waited, Dugan allegedly escorted him through a restricted, non-public section of the courthouse, effectively circumventing an administrative warrant for his arrest.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court has responded by suspending Judge Dugan from her judicial duties pending the outcome of her case.
Her legal team maintains her innocence and states that throughout her career, she has consistently upheld the rule of law. They are expected to enter a formal plea on Thursday.
The case has drawn attention from the Trump administration, with Attorney General Pam Bondi publicly condemning Dugan’s alleged actions.
“Shame on her,” Bondi stated, emphasizing that the underlying case involved domestic violence and suggesting that protecting victims should take precedence over defendants in such situations.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement policies and raises significant questions about judicial conduct and accountability.
As the legal proceedings move forward, the case continues to spark debate about the responsibilities of judges in maintaining the integrity of the legal system.
