In a recent interview with Megyn Kelly, Collin Carroll, the former chief of staff to Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg, discussed his suspension following allegations of leaking information to the press.
The conversation took place shortly after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth appeared on Fox News, where he attributed recent scandals to “leakers” and expressed frustration with former employees trying to protect themselves.
Carroll described Hegseth’s performance during the interview as unprepared, suggesting that he was under pressure but emphasized that Hegseth primarily answers to one person—President Donald Trump.
Kelly expressed concern for Hegseth, asking Carroll if he thought the Secretary was okay.
Carroll replied, “Honestly, I don’t know,” noting that he observed two contrasting sides of Hegseth during his time at the Pentagon.
He recounted a meeting with the House Freedom Caucus, where Hegseth excelled in engaging with members who were enthusiastic about budget discussions.
Carroll praised Hegseth’s directness and transparency during that meeting, stating it was one of the best he had ever witnessed.
However, Carroll also noted that in more internal settings, Hegseth appeared agitated and focused on minor details, which painted a different picture.
He highlighted that this agitation seemed to intensify around the time of the “Signalgate” incident, which involved concerns over leaks.
While he acknowledged the seriousness of leaking classified information, he also pointed out the stress Hegseth was under.
Overall, Carroll’s insights suggest a complex dynamic within the Pentagon as Hegseth navigates challenges both internally and externally, leaving observers questioning his state of mind amid growing pressures.
