Tom Homan, President Trump’s current border czar, reportedly criticized Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) for taking a taxpayer-funded trip to El Salvador to meet Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant alleged to have ties to the MS-13 gang.
Homan redirected a question during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” emphasizing that Van Hollen’s trip was misguided given the serious implications surrounding Abrego Garcia’s background.
Homan expressed his discontent, stating, “A U.S. senator traveled to El Salvador on taxpayer dime to meet with an MS-13 gang member… What bothers me more than that is that an illegal alien was arrested for murder in his own state.”
He highlighted the contrast between Van Hollen’s focus on Abrego Garcia and the ongoing border crisis, which has seen a significant rise in crime and fatalities linked to illegal immigration.
The Trump administration has accused Abrego Garcia of being associated with MS-13, a designation that classifies the gang as a foreign terrorist organization.
While Van Hollen claims Abrego Garcia is a victim of unlawful deportation, Homan criticized the senator for not addressing the real issues at the border, including the rise in sex trafficking and drug overdoses.
During the trip, Van Hollen defended his actions, challenging the Trump administration to substantiate its claims about Abrego Garcia’s gang affiliations.
He acknowledged that the trip was funded by taxpayer dollars but maintained that he was advocating for a constituent who faced grave injustices.
Homan concluded by lamenting the senator’s silence on the border crisis, noting the suffering of families who have lost loved ones to violence associated with illegal immigration.
He questioned how many families impacted by such tragedies Van Hollen had met in Maryland.
