President Donald Trump is now reportedly informing Cabinet members that Elon Musk will soon be “stepping back” from his high-profile role at the White House.
This speculation arises amidst concerns that Musk may be perceived as politically detrimental to Republicans following disappointing election results for the party.
According to new reports from Politico, Trump has been privately communicating with his inner circle that Musk, who is officially a senior advisor and informally heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), may return to his business ventures and assume a less visible role.
Three anonymous sources close to Trump indicated that Musk’s potential departure could coincide with the nearing end of his 130-day service limit as a special government employee, a status that exempts him from certain ethics regulations.
During a recent Oval Office appearance, Trump seemed to set the stage for Musk’s departure, expressing admiration for his contributions while acknowledging the demands of running a significant company.
“I think he’s been amazing, but he also has a big company to run,” he stated, suggesting Musk would eventually return to his business priorities.
Musk discussed the 130-day limit in a March 27 interview, stating that his team expects to complete essential work related to reducing the federal deficit within that timeframe.
Despite the expectations of his stepping down, some White House officials believe Musk will remain in an informal advisory capacity and continue to be a visible presence in Trump’s administration.
Ultimately, while there are indications of Musk’s impending transition, insiders caution against the assumption that he will completely detach from Trump’s orbit any time soon.
