Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) reportedly stated that prior to Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the United States had advised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to engage in negotiations with Russia to prevent the conflict from spiraling out of control.
In an interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Mullin emphasized that multiple warnings were given to Zelensky, suggesting that diplomatic discussions were necessary to avert war.
Mullin expressed confidence that if former President Donald Trump had been in office, the war would not have occurred. He criticized the Biden administration for allegedly ignoring the escalating situation, leading to prolonged hostilities.
“You know, I think what President Trump was meaning – not think, I know what he was meaning – is we gave Zelenskyy multiple warnings that there needed to be a negotiations before the war even started. And President Trump is absolutely correct. If he was in office, this war would have never, ever taken place.” Mullin noted.
“What we’re trying to do and what President Trump is trying to do is end the killing. It’s been going on for three years. The Biden administration turned a blind eye to it, and President Trump is the president that can end the war. There, fact – fact and simple.” he continued
Mullin believes that Trump possesses the leadership qualities required to end the ongoing conflict, drawing parallels to President Reagan’s negotiations with Gorbachev during the Cold War.
When questioned about a previous statement condemning Russia’s actions as “unjustified and unprovoked,” Mullin reiterated his stance that the war was avoidable.
He stressed the importance of positioning Trump to effectively negotiate a resolution, advocating for a strategy of “peace through strength” as opposed to what he perceives as the current administration’s approach of appeasement.
Mullin underscored the necessity of halting the ongoing violence and maintained that under Trump’s leadership, the conflict would have been prevented.
He called for diplomatic efforts to cease hostilities, emphasizing Trump’s deal-making capabilities as a means to achieve peace.
In summary, Senator Mullin contends that proactive diplomatic engagement, as advocated by the previous administration, could have deterred the war in Ukraine.
He asserted that Trump’s leadership is essential for negotiating an end to the conflict, contrasting it with the current administration’s policies.
