Newt Gingrich Slams ‘Suicidal’ Strategy of Republicans Opposed to Johnson’s Speakership

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) reportedly criticized Republicans who are unwilling to support House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in his endeavor to reclaim the gavel in the lower chamber.

His remarks follow days of criticism of Republican members who have diverged from President-elect Trump’s endorsement of Johnson’s second term.

“This is a stunningly stupid, suicidal strategy…These guys need psychologists,” Gingrich said during a Fox News appearance.

He then followed this criticism up with a post on X:

“I do not understand what the CONTRARIAN house republicans think they will gain by opposing Speaker Mike Johnson. They have no one who can get more votes.they risk crippling President Trump’s electoral win on January 6. They are in effect allies of the Democrats. I challenge them to explain what their end game is other than noise.” he said.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) responded with a detailed post that elucidated the reasons why Johnson was not the most suitable candidate for the position.

Johnson was unsuccessful in the initial vote on Friday due to the loss of the support of three critical Republicans.

Following the impasse on Friday afternoon, lawmakers intend to conduct an additional vote.
