South Korean Authorities Move to Arrest President Over Attempt to Impose Martial Law

On Monday, law enforcement officials in South Korea reportedly requested a court warrant to detain President Yoon Suk Yeol, nearly a month after the National Assembly unequivocally invalidated the president’s martial law decree.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, which is conducting a joint investigation with the police and military into Yoon’s martial law decree, requested the arrest warrant.

The nine justices of South Korea’s Constitutional Court are currently in the process of determining whether to remove Yoon from office, following his impeachment by the National Assembly on December 14.

Yoon’s attorney filed a challenge in the same court and criticized the arrest warrant request.

Additionally, Yoon was accused of dispatching the military to obstruct the National Assembly from voting to repeal the president’s martial law decree.

Ultimately, martial law was repealed by the National Assembly with a 190-0 resolution.

Kim Yong Hyun, the former South Korean Defense Minister, was apprehended subsequent to the martial law decree and it was reported that he attempted to commit suicide while in custody.

Kim is accused of encouraging Yoon to implement martial law. The martial law decree resulted in the first official arrest, which was the former defense minister.

Yoon maintains that martial law was essential and that he did not dispatch the military to disrupt the National Assembly.

The president contended that the martial law decree served as a warning to the liberal Democratic Party, which holds the majority in the National Assembly.

Yoon cited an unworkable relationship with the opposition-led National Assembly in a speech announcing martial law.

The National Assembly had designated 22 officials for impeachment since Yoon assumed office in 2022 and, according to Yoon, intended to target an additional 10 officials.

In April of last year, the Democratic Party’s control over the National Assembly was fortified by the resounding victory of the liberals in the parliamentary elections.
