On Sunday, Israel reportedly declared that it would be closing its embassy in Dublin due to the “extreme anti-Israel policies” of the Irish government.
The decision was made just days after Ireland announced that it would submit an intervention in support of South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
South Africa has accused Israel of perpetrating genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a charge that Israel vehemently denies.
According to Israeli officials, the closure of the embassy in Ireland does not imply that Israel is terminating diplomatic relations with Ireland.
Ireland’s embassy in Tel Aviv will continue to operate, according to officials from both nations.
However, the action suggested a more assertive diplomatic strategy by Gideon Saar, Israel’s conservative foreign minister who was appointed to the position last month.
This is in response to the increasing international criticism of Israel’s Gaza Strip conflict.
Mr. Saar also announced on Sunday that Israel would be establishing a new embassy in Moldova, a country that already maintains an embassy in Israel, as an illustration of his policy of rewarding countries that are considered friendly toward Israel.
In a statement, Simon Harris, the prime minister of Ireland, expressed his profound regret regarding Israel’s decision to close its embassy.
The relationship between Israel and Ireland has been turbulent for several months.
In May, Israel recalled its ambassadors to Ireland, Spain, and Norway following the recognition of a Palestinian state by each of the three countries.
The humanitarian crisis and the high death toll in the Palestinian enclave have resulted in an increasing level of international condemnation of Israel.
The local health authorities in Gaza have reported that over 44,000 Palestinians have been slain since October 2023.
These authorities do not differentiate between civilians and combatants.
According to Israeli estimates, approximately 17,000 combatants have been slain by its forces.
