According to sources familiar with the matter, Kash Patel, the FBI director nominee of President-elect Donald Trump, was reportedly informed by the agency he will soon lead that he had been targeted by Iranian hackers.
According to one source, hackers purportedly gained access to a portion of Patel’s communications.
The former chief of staff to the defense secretary during Trump’s first term, Patel, has been a vocal critic of Iran and an advocate for aggressive measures against the regime’s government.
Alex Pfeiffer, the spokesperson for the Trump transition, emphasized the importance of Patel’s leadership in the incoming administration’s security policies, despite his decision not to discuss the specifics of the incident.
“Kash Patel was a key part of the first Trump administration’s efforts against the terrorist Iranian regime and will implement President Trump’s policies to protect America from adversaries as the FBI Director,” Pfeiffer said.
Patel’s breach is not an isolated incident. Iranian and Chinese actors have reportedly intensified their efforts to infiltrate the communications of individuals associated with the President-elect in a series of recent attacks on Trump’s allies.
It was confirmed by sources that the FBI informed Todd Blanche, Trump’s primary attorney and nominee for deputy attorney general, that Chinese hackers had tapped his cellphone last month.
Iran, on the other hand, was accused of targeting members of Trump’s inner circle and presidential campaign.
