Trump Picks Jim O’Neill to be Deputy to RFK Jr at HHS

An investor and a historically close associate of billionaire Peter Thiel, Jim O’Neill is reportedly now the candidate that President-elect Trump has selected to fill the position of deputy secretary of Health and Human Services, according to a statement released by the president-elect on Tuesday.

It was reported on Monday by the Washington Post that President Trump would prefer that O’Neill be appointed to the position of deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

According to reports from Bloomberg, the president-elect had previously considered O’Neill for the position of head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as he proceeded toward the beginning of his first administration in late 2016.

In addition, O’Neill has served as the managing director of Mithril Capital Management, which is owned by Peter Thiel, and as the primary associate deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services during the administration of former President George W. Bush.

During a speech that he gave in 2014, O’Neill advocated for going against the out dated objectives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to include the effectiveness of drugs in its decision to approve them.

He also said that the agency should simply take into account the safety of the drugs.

“We should reform FDA so that it’s approving drugs after their sponsors have demonstrated safety and let people start using them at their own risk, but not much risk of safety. But let’s prove efficacy after they’ve been legalized.” O’Neill stated.

Some issues were raised by alleged specialists in response to his statements, who claimed that they exhibited a lack of information of the review procedure utilized by the FDA and that it is impossible to differentiate between the issues regarding safety and efficacy.
