Trump Heaps Praise on Gaetz After He Pulls Out of AG Consideration

Former Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) has a “wonderful future” ahead of him, according to President-elect Trump, following his withdrawal as his nominee to become attorney general.

Trump stated in a post on Truth Social that he “greatly” respects Gaetz’s efforts in attempting to run the Department of Justice (DOJ), but that he understood that Gaetz did not want to be a distraction.

“He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!” Trump wrote.

Trump revealed Gaetz his choice to oversee the DOJ only a week ago, provoking strong outcry from his detractors and becoming the most controversial of the incoming president’s nominees for his Cabinet.

There have been allegations of sexual misbehavior against Gaetz, which have been the subject of an inquiry by the House Ethics Committee that has lasted for years.

However, the committee decided not to release its report during its meeting on Wednesday.

According to a source who is acquainted with the proceedings of the committee, the committee voted (along party lines) against releasing the report in its current form, but it did decide to finish the report.

There will be another meeting of the committee on December 5th.

In addition, Gaetz was the target of an investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) about the allegations; nevertheless, the department ultimately opted not to file any charges against him.

Gaetz tendered his resignation from his position in the House of Representatives, which he has held since 2017, promptly upon the announcement of Trump’s candidacy, and just prior to the scheduled meeting of the Ethics Committee.
