On Monday, President-elect Donald Trump suggested that his administration was in the process of preparing to declare a national emergency in order to mobilize military assets to combat illegal immigration and secure the border.
The emergency declaration on the border would be the second of its kind, following the one that Trump issued during his first administration on February 15, 2019, in response to a dispute with Democrats in Congress regarding border security.
Trump wrote “TRUE!!!” on his Truth Social Platform in response to a statement from Judicial Watch’s Tom Fitton who stated:
“GOOD NEWS: Reports are the incoming @RealDonaldTrump
administration prepared to declare a national emergency and will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program.”
Trump subsequently vetoed a resolution from Democrats in Congress that opposed the declaration, which enabled him to finance the construction of the border wall.
Democrat state attorneys general and liberal organizations sued his administration, asserting that the declaration was unconstitutional.
President Joe Biden revoked the emergency declaration on his first day in office, thereby reversing a significant number of Trump’s immigration policies.
During Biden’s tenure, the number of unauthorized immigrants entering the United States reached an all-time high and exceeded 10 million.
Trump’s positions were broadly supported, while Biden’s handling of immigration was controversial, according to polling.
