Liz Cheney, the former Republican representative from Wyoming who stumped for Vice President Harris’ campaign, said on Wednesday that citizens, courts, media, and elected officials must now act as the “guardrails of democracy” following Donald Trump’s decisive victory for a second presidential term.
“Our nation’s democratic system functioned last night and we have a new President-elect,” she tweeted. “All Americans are bound, whether we like the outcome or not, to accept the results of our elections.”

Cheney noted the “special responsibility” of citizens in “the greatest nation on earth” to uphold the Constitution and maintain the rule of law.
“Citizens across this country, our courts, members of the press and those serving in our federal, state and local governments must now be the guardrails of democracy,” she concluded.
Meanwhile, Anthony Scaramucci, Trump’s former communications director, commented on the widespread dismay amongst liberals regarding Trump’s victory.
“I just think it’s a — it’s a sad day for a lotta people, you know, they talk about non-white immigrants [in the] United States in a very us versus them, dehumanizing sort of a way,” he said to CNN’s John Berman on Wednesday morning.
“And so hopefully, when he takes that mantle of leadership again, I hope that he takes [a] pause and thinks about that, that the country needs to unite and there needs to be a healing process in the country,” the fired Trump administration staffer added.
Unexpectedly, Jeff Bezos, owner of The Washington Post, congratulated Trump on his victory.
“Big congratulations to our 45th and now 47th President on an extraordinary political comeback and decisive victory,” the Amazon founder tweeted. “No nation has bigger opportunities. Wishing [Trump] all success in leading and uniting the America we all love.”
Bezos’s message gained attention due to his ownership of the Post and a recent decision to halt endorsements in the 2024 presidential race. This came after the Post’s editorial board had prepared to support Vice President Harris but was stopped by Bezos.
