Clinton Defends Bush For Staying Out Of Presidential Election

Ex-President Bill Clinton spoke out about former President George W. Bush’s seemingly passive approach in the 2024 presidential campaign.

Clinton spoke with CNN’s Edward-Isaac Dovere on his campaign bus, where he claimed that the former Republican president has “spoken up” far more than “he’s gotten credit for,” and claimed that Bush has talked about how “important” immigration is and that the nation “can’t survive without it.”

Clinton mentioned that Bush holds a favorable view of Colin Allred, a Texas Democratic congressman in a race againts Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), stating, “He’ll tell anybody that, that he’s a good guy.”

According to CNN, although Bush congratulated Allred after his 2018 House victory, he’s not directly supporting the Senate race.

Clinton also reflected on how life changes once out of politics, noting Bush’s wish to express his beliefs without detaching from his Republican roots.

“It’s very different when you’re out of political life, when there is no competition, no consequence,” Clinton remarked.

“And I think he believes that since he was a proud Republican all those years, it’s enough for him to make clear what he believes with all this, without giving up the party he’s been with all his life.”

A source close to Bush confirmed his focus on maintaining GOP Senate control, despite stepping away from presidential politics.

While on CNN’s “Inside Politics” on Sunday, Clinton said it would be disastrous if former President Donald Trump were re-elected, questioning America’s ability to “survive” another Trump presidency.

“You can put me on a breathing tube tonight, but it wouldn’t be surviving like I’m surviving now,” he commented. “And the same thing’s true in politics. I don’t know if we can survive or not. I think it would be a travesty if he became president again.”
